HBOT & Mold Toxicity

Mold exposure can leave you with serious symptoms. What is mold and how can it be toxic? 

Mold is a type of fungus that is present almost everywhere, both indoors and outside (1). In nature, mold helps break down dead organic matter, such as fallen leaves and dead trees (1). Mold needs moisture to grow, and thrives on surfaces like paper, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood (2).

Some people are sensitive to mold, particularly those with allergies, respiratory illnesses, or autoimmune diseases (2). Aspergillus fumigatus is a common mold that can cause aspergillosis, an invasive fungal infection that can be fatal in those with compromised immune systems (3).

What are some common symptoms of mold toxicity? 

● Respiratory: Stuffy nose, wheezing, red or itchy eyes, or shortness of breath (2)

● Digestive: Metallic taste, acid reflux, diarrhea, constipation, weight changes (3)

● Skin: Sensitivity to touch, itchiness, peeling, redness, discoloration (3)

How Can HBOT Help with Mold Exposure? 

● HBOT can be more effective than standard antifungal medicines at treating the life-threatening fungal infection caused by Aspergillus fumigatus (6). Scientists believe the infection’s poor response to standard antifungals is due to the low oxygen present in infection sites, which hinders the effectiveness of antifungal medications (6). These low levels of oxygen would explain why HBOT—which saturates the body with oxygen—is so effective at treating these infections

Research & Studies on HBOT & Mold

● A 2011 study used HBOT on 15 patients with Attention Deficit Disorder caused by significant mold exposure. Ten HBOT sessions significantly improved the attention span and reaction time of all 15.

● A 2018 study found that HBOT is more effective than standard antifungal medicines at treating Aspergillus fumigatus.

● A 2002 study cured 60% of participants of invasive aspergillosis, a fungal infection with a high mortality rate.

 

Why are incidences of mold toxicity increasing? 

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 10-50% of homes and buildings have mold in clinically significant amounts (7). This is likely due to modern, airtight construction methods which reduce airflow and trap humid air inside; this humidity encourages the growth and spread of mold (7).
